Frequently asked questions.
Everything you might want to know before booking a first session.
What can I expect at my first appointment?
The first session is a chance for us to understand what brings you in, review confidentiality and consent, and begin to plan next steps together. There is no expectation to have it all figured out beforehand.
Is what I share confidential?
Yes, with limited legal exceptions: risk of serious harm to yourself or others, suspected abuse of a child or dependent adult, and court orders. Your clinician will review these on day one.
How much does therapy cost?
Session fees range from $185–$325 CAD depending on service type. See our Fees & Insurance page for the full list and coverage details.
Do you take insurance?
Most extended health benefit plans in Canada — including Sun Life, Manulife, Canada Life, Green Shield, Blue Cross, and Desjardins — cover services by Registered Psychotherapists, Registered Social Workers, or Psychologists. Direct billing is offered where supported, and detailed receipts are always provided for reimbursement.
Is therapy covered by OHIP or provincial health plans?
Psychotherapy and counselling by our clinicians are generally not covered by OHIP or other provincial health plans, but fees are tax-deductible as a medical expense and often reimbursable through workplace benefit plans or Health Spending Accounts.
Do you offer online counselling?
Yes. We provide secure, PHIPA/PIPEDA-compliant video sessions. Services are only offered in Ontario right now, and are coming soon to other provinces.
How often will we meet?
Most clients begin with weekly 50-minute sessions. Frequency is reviewed together and adjusts as your needs change.
What is your cancellation policy?
We ask for 24 hours notice. Late cancellations and no-shows are billed at the full session rate.
What treatment approaches do you use?
Our clinicians practise Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to help people meet their goals. CBT is a well-researched, structured approach that focuses on how thoughts, feelings, and behaviours influence one another.
What is PTSD?
PTSD is a treatable response to a frightening, overwhelming, or life-threatening experience. Common signs include nightmares, flashbacks, feeling on edge, emotional shutdown, and avoiding reminders of what happened.
How do you treat PTSD?
We use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). It helps you understand how the experience shaped your thoughts and beliefs, reduce symptom intensity, and rebuild a sense of safety in daily life.
How long does PTSD treatment take?
CBT is often delivered over about 12 sessions. Some people need less, others benefit from longer-term support. We review goals and progress with you throughout.
Can PTSD treatment be done virtually?
Yes. PTSD counselling is available through secure video sessions or in person at our Ontario office, whichever feels safer and more workable for you.
Do I need a formal PTSD diagnosis to start?
No. You can begin counselling with trauma-related symptoms whether or not you have a diagnosis. We also offer non-diagnostic mental health assessments if you want a clearer picture first.
What if I'm in a mental health emergency?
Beaches Mental Health is not a crisis service. If you are in immediate danger, call 9-1-1 or go to your nearest emergency department. For 24/7 support in Canada, call or text 9-8-8 (Suicide Crisis Helpline).
